UIP 2018 - XVIIIth World Congress of the International Union of Phlebology

4th - 8th February, 2018

Hosts: Australasian College of Phlebology

The XVIIIth UIP World Congress of Phlebology attracted more than 1200 worldwide delegates from 67 countries to a hot and sunny Melbourne between 4th – 8th February 2018.

The World Congress brought together world experts in the field of phlebology, including vascular surgery, interventional radiology, interventional cardiology, dermatology, nursing and vascular medicine. The strong scientific program featured a range of key-note lectures, plenary sessions, presentations, free paper sessions, consensus meetings, workshops, hands on training sessions and masterclasses on a wide range of topics with over 700 presentations taking place over the 5 days.

A total of 574 scientific presentations were scheduled over UIP2018 covering all matters phlebology. That’s a total of 136 hours of pure scientific content. And that doesn’t include the 8 debates, 35 How-I-Do-It Videos, 44 HOTS stations, 59 masterclasses and 23 Basic Phlebology Course presentations. Thanks to the Founders of the UIP for the “Forum of the Founders” on recurrent varicose veins, all our Journal Editors for the “Forum of the Editors” and the Venous Forums involved in the “Forum of Venous Forums”

With over 50 sponsors and congress partners filling the exhibition hall, it was a busy few days! We also enjoyed a few fun elements in the Exhibition over lunch, including a Fashion Show sponsored by Medi, a Turkish Dance Performance sponsored by The Turkish Society of Phlebology and a Dragon Dance to celebrate the Chinese New Year organised by Prof. Jinsong Wang from China.

“A fantastic place for a congress. The congress had overall a very high standard which not least was seen in the high number of participants at the venue in spite of the temptations in Melbourne with surroundings”

Live Broadcast Sessions

The Live Broadcast sessions were extremely well attended and showcased the latest in Interventional Radiology, advanced Endovenous Procedures including new glue ablative methods, laser and radiofrequency ablation, MOCA, foam sclerotherapy, as well as new treatments for Lymphoedema and Vaginal Rejuvenation.

UIP Consensus

The UIP consensus on “Contraindications of Sclerotherapy” and an “Intersociety Consensus on Venous Mapping” met to discuss ongoing consensus documents. Final Reports for the UIP Consensus’ on “Venous Rehabilitation” and “Pelvic Congestion Syndrome” were presented during the UIP plenary.

HOTS (Hands on Training Sessions)

The HOTS sessions proved to be a huge success with over 300 delegates attending these small hands on sessions. This was a perfect opportunity for delegates to touch, feel and ask questions about the products in a small interactive environment.

“From a nursing perspective the HOTS were very helpful”

“UIP 2018 was an excellent international meeting. Great HOTS.” - Jobst

Gala Dinner

With a 1920’s theme, the Gala Dinner saw an amazing selection of outfits and feather boas. Guests enjoyed a gorgeous dinner followed by dancing to the sounds of the fabulous Melbourne SKA Band at the Crown Palladium.

Finally, a big thank you must go out to our amazing sponsors and program partners and to all of those who were involved in the organisation of sessions, reviewing of abstracts, our speakers and all those involved behind the scenes. There are too many of you to thank here, but your contribution and dedication to the UIP and the congress is hugely appreciated.
