Summary provided by Prof. Claudio Allegra
The XIVth World Congress of Phlebology was held at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome, Italy from the 9th - 14th of September, 2001. 2130 attendees were present at the meeting from 40 nations, with the related scientific societies in 7 rooms, including the large "aula magna" ballroom.
The date can’t be forgotten since, in the middle of the event, the 9-11 twin towers terrorist attack happened, watched live during the same meeting, with many attendees thinking at the beginning it was a movie and not reality.
During that meeting I was identified as president elect, following prof. Hugo Partsch.
Phlebology was covered in all its multiple aspects and the congress opening was anticipated by 2 consensus: one on “ Clinical-Anatomical nomenclature of the superficial, deep and perforator veins of lower extremities “, the other one on “CEAP: Calssification, refinement of “ C”. This aspect initiated the habit of the Consensus Conference during the meetings. Major topics were the sclerofoam, phlebology on the web, alternative techniques substituting the stripping such as radiofrequency and laser, the long haul flight thrombosis. In this last session I’m delighted to remember a young Kurosh Parsi, now UIP president.
